First Time Riding the Montreal Metro
Everything you need to know for your first trip on the STM Metro.
Getting an OPUS Card
The OPUS card is Montreal's reloadable transit card. You can buy one at any metro station from the ticket machines for $6. Load a single fare ($3.75 for Zone A) or a monthly pass. Contactless payment (credit/debit tap) also works at all turnstiles.
Finding Your Platform
Metro signs show the line color and the name of the last station in each direction. For example, on the Green Line, you'll see signs for 'Honore-Beaugrand' (east) or 'Angrignon' (west). Find the direction sign that matches where you're going.
Making Transfers
Transfers between lines are free within the same trip (120 minutes). Follow the colored signs to switch lines. At busy stations like Berri-UQAM, follow the overhead signs showing the line color and direction.
Service Hours
The metro runs from approximately 5:30 AM to 1:00 AM on weekdays, with extended hours on Friday and Saturday nights. Trains run every 3-5 minutes during peak hours and every 5-10 minutes off-peak.
